The truth is that I do not start my day with a newspaper and a cup of coffee. I don't follow the news unless it's something I care about to be honest. My life is usually occupied with classes, practice, and trying to have some sort of social life. Although some of my go to sources are very gen z, I still try to keep myself informed of what's going on in the world
1. My parents
Honestly, my parents are my most reliable news sources, especially my dad. He watches the news every morning and he has a desk job so he's constantly surfing the web. Whether it's politics, the economy, sports, or something big happening the world, they always bring it up. I might not keep up with the news as much as I should, but my parents make sure I'm never left out.
2. TikTok
People joke about TikTok, but it's where I learn about breaking news. In this day in age that's the app most college students use on their phones. When something big happens, it comes on my "For You" page as soon as it happens. It's easy to understand what's happening with short videos. The idea of hearing people's own words and seeing different perspectives appeals to me. Although I know not everything on TikTok is 100 percent accurate, it's usually where I hear things happen first.
3. Twitter
Twitter is mainly used for quick updates or videos they won't show on the news. There's a good chance that something that's trending is important. In real time. The app is especially useful for sports news, breaking stories, and live updates during big events. I use Twitter when I need fast information, but I don't scroll for hours like I would on tiktok or instagram.
4. Apple News
I use Apple News for more detailed or official information. Plus i've always just gotten notifications from them on my Iphone. It feels more trustworthy and organized than social media, and I go there to read about what's happening rather than watching a 30 second video. Usually, I use it to be more informed or to better understand something deeper than just what is happening.
5. ESPN Socials and the App
Sports are a big part of my life, so ESPN is one of my main news sources. In college and professional sports, I check it for game results, injuries, trades, and any other information. Sport news can sometimes engage me in the rest of the news cycle, especially when it relates to major events of teams that I follow. The format is familiar, easy to follow
I don't consume news in a perfect or traditional way, but it suits my generation well. Even if I'm scrolling in between classes or waiting for practice to begin, I still stay aware of what's going on in the world thanks to my parents, social media, and a few trusted apps.
